The city of Howling Mile is quarantined and cordoned off from the rest of society. To leave is to die quickly. To stay is to die slowly... if you're lucky.

Carrier hunts in the terrifying skeleton of a once-thriving city ruled by Tar Babies and Mowers, cannibalism and disease. Her goals are to keep herself alive, to help a dying friend, to maintain humanity in a place where few remember what it means to be human. She doesn't dream of escaping until she meets The Dancer, who shows her a reality she hadn't dared imagine.

Award-winning author Conrad Williams has found the nightmare land where science fiction, fantasy, and horror share uncommon boundaries, and if you let him he will lure you there and make you believe in it. What are you afraid of?

Saoirse rates this title as Excellent
Horror? Fantasy? SF? -- 12/14/2004

This story slips and slithers between genres, or maybe just makes them irrelevant. A terrifying setting, great characters. Wonderful writing. I would read Conrad Williams' grocery lists if I could get my hands on them.
