"I have long been fascinated by apocalypse and what comes after — whether civilization's collapse, or some kind of transcendence, or both, or neither."

It's the unthinkable, and all-too-possible, future that Howard V. Hendrix explores in "In the Smoke," one of twelve science fiction stories showcased in Mobius Highway.

I guess post-apocalypse stories are out of date (I think this one dates back to the mid-80's), but "In the Smoke" has some excellent writing going for it, among other things. Worth the read for sure.
