Terry Bisson
|
|
Terry Bisson has had a long, eclectic, and acclaimed career as a writer and publishing entrepreneur. He's scripted radio plays, talk-radio productions, and comic books; written novels and novelizations for both adult and young adult audiences; run a mail-order book service (with Judy Jensen), and published short fiction in many magazines just as prestigious as The New Yorker, thank you very much (check out his website; then you'll get it). His honors include the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, Theodore Sturgeon, and Phoenix (Best Southern SF Writer) Awards. If you want a proper biography befitting the understated humor of his stories, you'll have to read the one on his website. Bisson is originally from Owensboro, Kentucky, attended school at Grinnell College and University of Louisville, and now makes his home in Oakland, CA, though we hear that Owensboro is becoming a hot town for writers.

| In this collection, Bisson showcases the wide range of his talent with gentle fantasies that include the wry title storywinner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards ecological allegories; a novelette about experimental trips into the realm of death; and a science fiction mini-epic.

| Everybody should have a friend like Wilson Wu. He's been a rock musician, an engineer, and a pastry chef; he got halfway into a medical degree and a math Ph.D.; he graduated law school and passed the bar on the first try. Combining meteorology and entomology, he helped on a weather-control project in Quetzalcan. (Don't ask.) Not until these pages, however, have his skills truly been tested. The collection includes the Hugo-nominated "Get Me to the Church on Time."

| Sure, we're all made of starstuff. But some forms of space dust are, well, absurd. When the not-so-next door neighbors turn out to be too distasteful to contemplate, there's only one solution: pretend no one's home.
