Lucius Shepard

Lucius is a prodigy, that is, a big guy you wouldn't want to cross. He's also the deserving recipient of many prominent science fiction and mainstream awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, International Horror Guild, and World Fantasy awards, and the National Magazine Award for Short Fiction, among others. His fiction, journalism, and commentary have appeared in Playboy, Spin, Omni, Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Ellen Datlow's Event Horizon and SciFiction online magazines. Far from being a writer of merely escapist adventure, Lucius uses the fantastic in his stories to amplify cultural perspectives and psychological relationships. A giant dragon, for instance, can only be slain by the lifework of an obsessed artist; an infamous Nazi villain performs Dr. Moreau-like experiments in the South American jungle; a Western ghost and Nepalese house spirits join a battle that decides the outcome of a love affair—Lucius finds metaphors that are unique and yet as familiar as the most universal dreams and nightmares.

Lucius is writing us a series of movie reviews sure to provoke both thought and controversy. For more information on Lucius Shepard, check out his website.

Colonel Rutherford's Colt is the story of Jimmy and Rita, dealers in historical firearms—those used by the famous and the infamous. Raised up hard by his father in Montana, Jimmy is a curiously blank figure who seems to live most fully inside the stories he tells Rita about certain of the guns they acquire. When the wife of a slain white-power leader brings him her husband's Colt .45 to sell, he begins a story that draws everyone involved with the weapon into a gothic plot that—to Jimmy at least—contrives its own reality, one that may well have a disastrous resolution. In the mid-nineteenth century, vampires gather at Castle Banat, one of their most sprawling and ancient warrens. Their five-hundred-year breeding project has produced the Golden, a mortal of perfect blood, and they've come to drink from her in a ceremony that will incidentally make her one of the Family. When the girl is found murdered, the clan’s shadowy patriarch calls on the detective Michel Beheim to solve the crime. But Michel has been a vampire for only a short while and soon is fighting to survive the bizarre, ancient terrors of the labyrinthine castle. More

Eliot was vaguely aware that he was just another oddity in Mr. Chatterji's collection—like the resident khaa, or the haunted fireplace from New England, or the unstable new houseguest, Michaela. Still, he was more or less content—until the ghost of Aimée Cousineau escaped her crate. More
